EuroDance: ULTRAVOX & MIDGE URE ( I )

Ultravox fue una de las bandas pioneras de la escena electrónica británica, aunque también se les asocia con géneros como el New Romantic, Synth-Pop y New Wave. Sus inicios datan de 1973 en Londres bajo el nombre de Tiger Lily. En los 3 primeros albumes no estaba el que para mi es el alma del grupo: Midge Ure, y el sonido era demasiado trash para mi gusto, y de hecho apenas escucho esos discos: El álbum debut homónimo, presentado en 1977, producido junto a Steve Lillywhite y con la colaboración de Brian Eno. O el segundo, "Ha!-Ha!-Ha!", con temas como "Hiroshima mon amour", "Rockwrok" y "The frozen ones". Su tercer disco fue "Systems of Romance" (1978), producido por Conny Plank (productos de los miticos Kraftwerk) y Dave Hutchins, que se caracterizó por un uso notorio de sintetizadores. Destacan aquí los temas "Slow motion" y "Quiet men".
Tras autofinanciar una gira por los Estados Unidos, que no tuvo el éxito esperado, John Foxx anunció sus intenciones abandonar la banda y de seguir como solista, generando la disolución del grupo... hasta que en 1979 entra en escena Midge Ure, que reagrupó Ultravox junto a Cann, Allen y Currie, al ingresar como nuevo cantante, guitarrista y tecladista. Fue así que, nuevamente con Conny Plack como productor, editaron su cuarto disco, "Vienna", con Chrysalis Records en 1980.

Este disco fue un bombazo y llegó al lugar #3 del UK Albums Chart, vendiendo más de 300,000 copias, por lo que obtuvo un Disco de Platino, poniendo a Ultravox nuevamente en el foco de la escena musical británica, gracias a canciones como "Sleepwalk" (#14 del UK Top 40), "Passing strangers", y sobre todo "Vienna" (#2 del UK Top 40) o "All stood still" (#8 del UK Top 40).

Paralelamente al proyecto "Ultravox" Ure y Currie participan en la creación de un nuevo grupo que mantiene mucho del sonido característico de Ultravox: Visage, con la voz de Steve Strange y que debuta con un sencillo estupendo: "Fade to Grey", con coros de Ure.

El éxito continuaría con su siguiente álbum, "Rage in Eden" (1981), Disco de Oro con más de 100,000 copias vendidas y #4 del UK Albums Chart.

Para su sexto disco, "Quartet" (1982), Ultravox contó como productor con el legendario George Martin, llegando al #6 del UK Albums Chart con temas como "Reap the wild wind", "Hymn", "We came to dance" y "Visions in blue".

En está época Midge Ure saca un sencillo en solitario: "No Regrets", seguido en 1983 por "After a Fashion", ambas con el inconfundible sonido Ultravox.

In 1982 Midge Ure released the song as his first solo single. This version was based on the 1975 hit cover version by The Walker Brothers.

Midge Ure and Mick Karn - After A Fashion

'After A Fashion' was a one-off single released by Ultravox lead singer Midge Ure and Mick Karn bassist for the art rock band Japan, from 1974 to 1982.

The song peaked at number 39 on the UK singles chart in 1983.

The cover for the single was taken by Linda McCartney.

I have included the video that was taken from the Timmy Mallet Saturday program as this is the only version that has surfaced on You Tube (to my knowledge). The quality is not great. Midge Ure se multiplica por 3: a sus pinitos como solista y su liderazgo absoluto de Ultravox se une su participación en Visage, que publica un segundo album

El séptimo álbum fue "Lament", editado en 1984, también Disco de Oro por sus ventas.

En 1985, Midge Ure consigue llevar a buen puerto su carrera paralela en solitario publicando su primer album: "The Gift", un estupendo disco, con un sencillo que suena al mejor Ultravox: "If I Was"

Para 1986, Warren Cann dejaba su lugar a Mark Brzezicki, y con éste Ultravox lanza el octavo album: "U-Vox", con un sonido menos electrónico y más pop, que no obtuvo el éxito deseado y que deja decepcionado a Ure, que abandona el grupo, disolviéndose la banda, por segunda vez, en 1988.
